Hans Matschukat
I have held cameras, film or digital, in my hands for almost 50 years. Everything from a $5 Kodak Brownie to a $5,000 Leica or Linhof. In each case, I always attempted to capture a moment that spoke to me in some way. 10’s of thousands of images later, I still anticipate the reviewing of my efforts. Back in the days of film, it took hours or even days to get that chance. Now I can review seconds later, but the thrill of being able to look at a moment in time has never been diminished because of technology.
I’d like to mention some photographers who I admire and appreciate:
Walker Evans for his direct, honest and clear observations of the everyday.
Andre Kertesz for his stylish documentation of life and place – He didn’t last long in one commercial job because his employer complained that his images “speak too much”.
Bauhaus photographers, collectively, for their adventurous use of perspective, design & light.
Julius Shulman for his rigorous devotion to the perfect photograph of a building.
Gary Braasch for showing me the power and beauty of abstract nature.
Photography for me is as much a craft as it is an art. The craft is getting the picture I see on the film or the sensor. I’ve always enjoyed the problem solving aspect of photography. Some pictures come easily and some only succeed after much thought and hard work. It’s the same in the shop, when working with wood. The rest of the world recedes when I’m really focusing on either arena.
The art is, or may be, in the mind of the observer of my photographs. Whether it happens or not is really out of my control.
All photographs are priced at £230 (incl. VAT).
Average size of the photographs is 40 x 60 cm including mount. Images are mounted on 5mm foamcore.
